Should You Apply for an Antique License Plate for Your Classic Car?

Antique License Plates

Owning a classic car is something that many people dream about for years before finally getting the chance to park their ideal ride right in their own garage. Many people who own classic cars wonder whether they should register their antique cars and trucks with antique Michigan license plates. While the cheaper price of an antique plate may be initially appealing, it’s helpful for classic car shoppers and owners to know its limitations before making the decision to purchase one.

When you apply for an antique license plate in Michigan, you have to verify that you only use historical vehicle for car club activities, parades, shows, and other events, and not for general transportation. Once you agree to that stipulation, and you receive your antique license plate, you can be ticketed for using your classic car for other purposes. While this might seem like an easy law to dodge, that’s not always the case. For example, if you’re pulled over while driving your classic car to work on a Tuesday morning, you might have a hard time convincing the police officer that you’re going to a historical car related event, and you’ll likely drive away with a ticket.

However, if you actually only use your classic car for historical events and car shows, then an antique plate is a great way for you to spend less on registration and insurance. And fortunately, to accommodate participants in the Woodward Dream Cruise, the State of Michigan essentially gives owners of classic cars with antique plates a free pass during the entire month of August to drive their cars for additional purposes.

When deciding on which type of plate is best for your classic car, just ask yourself, “Will I want to use this for purposes other than going to car shows?” If the answer is, “Yes,” then you’re like most classic car owners, and a standard plate is your best choice. After all, when you’ve got a great looking classic car in your garage, it’s hard to resist the temptation of taking it out for a cruise on a sunny summer day.
