Ford unveiled the Thunderbird at the Detroit Auto Show on February 20, 1954. The first production car came off the line on September 9, 1954, and went on sale on October 22, 1954 as a 1955 model, and sold briskly. 3,500 orders were placed in the first ten days of sale. Ford had only projected building 10,000, but eventually the 1955 sales totaled 16,155.
The 1957 model underwent a more radical restyle. The front bumper was reshaped, the grille and tailfins were made larger, and larger tail-lights were fitted. The spare wheel moved inside the trunk again, and was redesigned to allow it to be mounted vertically. The side “Thunderbird” script moved from the fins to the front fenders. 1957 Thunderbird sales were 21,380, including three extra months of production because the 1958 models were late, and only 1363 of those Thunderbirds were the E Code. This gorgeous white ’57 E Code Thunderbird was originally from Denver, Colorado, but has spent the last several years in Southern California. This car has been beautifully detailed and is ready to drive and enjoy today.
It is equipped with the 312 cubic-inch V8 paired with the heavy duty Ford-O-Matic 3 speed automatic transmission, power brakes, as well as a one of a kind factory dual 4 barrel air cleaner, factory aluminum highrise intake, modified heads and a modified camshaft. The engine compartment is clean and well-detailed, showing little sign of use. Turn the key and the engine fires with a crisp burble from the dual through-the-bumper exhaust tips.
Bathed in elegant white paint with a classic red interior, this rare E Code ‘Bird still attracts a ton of attention anywhere you go. The paint is beautiful on the straight body. There are very few, barely noticeable touch ups on the driver side door near the handle, and on the passenger side rear tailfin. The white canvas convertible top is brand new and sits on the original frame. She is also equipped with an Iconic Porthole Hardtop, which is in beautiful condition. This very special E Code ‘Bird appears to have on of its original Firestone tires in the trunk as a spare. We were going to buy a new one, but thought it was really something of interest to keep with the car. The undercarriage is very clean, with no signs of rust or abuse.
For driving comfort, there’s a power seat and power windows. The dash light above the functional AM/FM cassette radio works. The original Town and Country radio is boxed in the trunk. Red rubber floor mats, complete with Thunderbird emblem to match the red door panels, protect the beautiful red carpet. In the photographs the climate control knob is missing, but it has been installed since. The dash is beautiful and the functional gauges, including the clock, sparkle in front of the driver. The odometer shows just 67,000 plus miles, and while I can not guarantee them as actual, I do believe it is highly likely. I found an oil service sticker from 1987 that shows 47,000 plus miles.
When Ford Motor Company was redesigning the Thunderbird for the 21st Century, they looked back to the original, considered by many to be the best Thunderbird ever, for inspiration. This is a car that you won’t be afraid to drive, and it’s so nice, it’ll be hard to find excuses not to drive it every day. In fact, if this were my car, that’s exactly what I’d do. Imagine coming out of work after a hard day and finding this beautiful rare E Code Thunderbird waiting for you in the parking lot. I think it’s physically impossible to have a bad day behind the wheel of a Thunderbird convertible. Call today! 248-974-9513
